2701 Monroe Street, Madison, Wisconsin

The building´s double-story volume, fenestration, etc. existed when our clients engaged us to provide full design for the interior as a restaurant. We set about the task of creating an easily serviced series of dining rooms within a room with the goal of giving each table the sense of being "the best seat in the house."

We began by creating geometric shapes to individualize the space, both in the horizontal and vertical planes. The environment that emerged maximized the drama of volume, geometry, shape, and color. The dominant architectural shapes employed were the circle and the wave. With the augmentation of jewel tones of purple, blue, burgundy, and yellow supplemented with natural maple, the restaurant patrons are treated to a sense of fun and movement not leading the eye but allowing it to move at it's own pace thru the space. From the movement, a quiet energy is formed.

The lighting fixtures afford each table its quiet spotlight and punctuate the volume with a firefly effect. Integration of exposed metal, light-washed galvanized soffits and "water-lily" pods floating above the dining area at different heights enhance the sense of flow and create a different world from the one we encounter daily.
